Our Root Barrier Installation Process

We begin with a root investigation to map the extent and direction of root growth using air excavation, which exposes roots without damaging them. This allows us to determine the optimal barrier placement — close enough to protect the structure but far enough from the trunk to preserve the tree's stability and access to water and nutrients.

A narrow trench is excavated to the required depth, typically 60 to 90 cm for residential applications. HDPE barrier panels are installed vertically with the ribbed face directed toward the tree, which deflects roots downward rather than allowing them to circle along the barrier surface. Panels are overlapped and sealed at joints. Roots that have already crossed the barrier line are cleanly pruned with sharp tools to promote healthy callus formation. The trench is backfilled and the surface restored.
