Co-dominant stems — where two or more leaders grow from the same point — are the most common structural defect in Vancouver's urban trees. Our Cabling & Bracing Process

The process begins with a ground-level and aerial inspection to map the tree's architecture and identify failure points. We measure the angle of attachment, assess bark inclusion depth, and evaluate the overall crown load. Based on this assessment, we determine cable placement height, typically installed at two-thirds the distance between the weak union and the branch tips.

For cabling, we drill through the stems, install forged steel eyebolts, and connect them with extra-high-strength steel cable tensioned to allow natural movement while limiting the range of sway. For bracing, threaded steel rods are installed through split or cracked unions to hold the stems together mechanically. Cables and braces are inspected annually and adjusted as the tree grows.
